Rise of The Dead- A Review of The Novel by Anthony Giangregorio

|

The story starts out on a yacht with an apparent mad scientist and an experiment gone horribly wrong. A bit later on a crowded beach a dead man walks out of the water and starts biting people. This progresses rather quickly into a zombie uprising. The story then switch's over to our hero's who are just finding themselves in a dire situation. Alright, pretty standard stuff from here. Our first hero is a "slacker" teenager, our second is a bible thumper (absolutely nothing wrong there except for the obvious use of character typing). They meet up with a middle aged house wife that has Been living with a neglectful husband, who as undead now is menacing her. She is right out of the "being a good housewife in the fifties" handbook. Then there is a sword toting young (and immodest) lady they find in a (wait for it) MALL. Naturally within days these older and younger couples get together. They actually seem to have some fun until the real bad guys of the book come in. I am of course talking about the evil military men who have decided to set themselves up like gang members and rule and terrorize. I had trouble finishing this book. Everything is laid out like he has a formula he just places and interchanges parts in. The characters do not seem very realistic. The action seems contrived, and if civilization ever did crumble the vast majority of our armed forces would be the ones trying to help settle things back down. Sorry if I got on a rant, I love this genre of fiction, but I still expect quality writing with good characterization. Action in large quantity in a realistic way. Zombies are fun, but unreal. Everything else that goes into a book should be realistic. This author has many more books in print, so I figure I just got a bad one. I can not recommend this novel.
