Monster Island- A Review of David Wellington's Book

|

This is the first in a series of three (so far) books about the downfall of civilization as we know it and the rise of zombie like creatures. The story starts out aboard a ship coming into the remains of Manhattan. On board is a strike team of "girl warriors" from Africa to retrieve aids medication for their leader. They are protecting the main character, Dekalb, who was a UN worker who knows where to find the medication. We quickly find out his motivation is the safety of his daughter, still in Africa. Wow, that is a lot of setup compared to the standard zombie story, but we soon find out this is not the run of the mill type story. Ever ambitious and greatly detailed the author carries us into battle. Manhattan, the island is full of the undead, but this is not the only thing working against our group. The undead are getting smarter, they are being influenced and led by and ancient druid (say what?) and a mad doctor who has in what I thought was highly original, intubated himself so when he changed into a zombie his brain would not die. (For any unfamiliar with this process, it is placing a breathing tube into the lungs to provide artificial breathing to in this case keep the brain from dying). I must say I was impressed with the passion this book is written with. The action is top notch and will keep you on edge. I think I prefer the more brain dead zombie, or standard zombie, but if you can overlook that and some of the far out stuff then you will most definatly enjoy. Personally, this is my favorite of this series. I did not enjoy the other two as well. All three can be found on Amazon and Books a Million. And if you go to his site (http://www.brokentype.com/davidwellington/) you can read some for free including this book, but unless they have updated it, the editing is much better in the printed book.
